Voter Registration Mass Mailings
Did you receive a letter from the SBE?
Various organizations use publicly available information to send voter registration bulk mailings to households or individuals that they believe are not registered to vote.
These mailings include a letter about registering and a voter registration form pre-addressed to the relevant county board of elections office. Although intended to be helpful, the letters can be confusing, appear to be from the BOE, and may contain outdated or incorrect information.
Here are some helpful tips if you receive a registration letter:
- If you have questions or concerns about a mailing, please contact the organization responsible for it. Look closely at the letter, not the registration form's return address.
- If a mailing encourages you to register to vote and you are already registered at your current address, you do not have to do anything and can simply discard the mailing.
- The State Board encourages all voters to routinely check their registration status and details using the State Board’s online Voter Search tool. If you have questions about your voter registration, you may contact your county board of elections.
- For information about registering to vote in North Carolina, go to the Registering section at ncsbe.gov.
- The regular voter registration deadline is October 9, 2026, for the November 3, 2026, general election. If you miss this deadline, you may register and vote at the same time at any early voting site in your county during the early voting period.

The NC State Board of Elections is encouraging voters to update their voter record with the most complete information & have sent letters to affected voters.

- Voters will be asked to verify their birthday & provide either their NC Drivers License #, NC DMV non-driver ID #, or last four of their SSN.
- This does NOT affect their ability to vote normally.

If you received a letter and would like to add ID info, you can:
- Return the completed letter to the SBE with the enclosed envelope
- Bring or mail the letter to our office
- Provide the information when you vote in the Primary. Poll workers will ask these voters if they would like to offer that information.

Are you on the Registration Repair List?
This is an effort by the State Board of Elections to collect identification numbers from registered voters who do not have an N.C. driver’s license/DMV ID number or social security number in the state’s voter registration database. These numbers are used to verify that registrants are who they claim to be. Voters who do not have this information in their record may need to cast a provisional ballot and provide this information the next time they vote.
If your name appears in the Registration Repair Search Tool, you can update your registration:
- If you have an N.C. driver’s license or DMV ID number, you can update your voter registration application through the DMV’s website for free at payments.ncdot.gov. You don’t need to create an account. On the myNCDMV login page, click “Continue as Guest.” Select “Yes” when asked to update your voter information.
- By contacting or visiting your local BOE.
- Utilizing the SBE's mailings, sent in early August.
